SWHIT DESIGN MENTORING
presents

*FREE* Interior Design Career Workshop

Hosted by Sarah Whitney, NYC Interior Design + Mentor

"Only 1 in 3 students will actually become a practicing designer."

TRUE or FALSE?

TRUE.

My professional practice professor told us that in the last year of grad school.

I was shocked.

After practicing for almost 10 years in two of NYC’s award-winning firms, now I want to share what I’ve figured out.

In 2.5 hrs, you’ll learn...

🤓 Best ways to get a paid job at top New York City firms

You will learn simple + actionable ways to use the resources you already have at your fingertips AND how to seek out more.

...even if you're feeling behind or a little lost right now, you'll know exactly what to say after this workshop!

🤓 #1 MOST VALUABLE TRAIT of interns who get hired full-time

If you master this one trait, it will open alllll the doors for you.

🤓 My EXACT script to negotiate your first salary offer

I learned this the hard way... later used it to negotiate a $15K raise

Start to understand the structure of an entire salary conversation: beginning, middle, and how you want to end it.

Learn 'the first rule of salary negotiation' and avoid making the HUGE mistake I did.

Once you learn this strategy and begin practicing, this is how you earn more money after preparing for ONE conversation with your future employer!

💥For anyone who may have attended previous workshops with me, I'm adding a big update that you'll love💥

Full disclosure: it's a long list of places I'd apply for an internship or job if I were starting over as a designer...

💥💥💥 I name 62+ NYC SHOWROOMS and 38 NYC Design Firms💥💥💥

🎁🎁🎁 BONUS: If you stay to the end, I'll send you a small gift 🎁🎁🎁

Newly updated in Fall 2023, this two-part gift package is another huge boost to help your job search.

*Especially if you're about to graduate, THIS IS FOR YOU*

Q. Has this been helpful to students?

A. Yes! Here's is some direct feedback from the past 3 years:

"10/10 would recommend to anyone interested in a career in interior design"

"This was really helpful and inspiring, the job search seems more easier and clearer now after hearing your talk"

"Your expertise and wisdom has been one of my favorites in the job hunting classes I've taken so far. Thank you from the bottom of my heart"

"Some of the biggest takeaways that I appreciated from today's session was
1. How to network. Breaking it down really helps with the first step and how to start
2. How to close the loop. The 3 step draft really helps anticipate the timeline and response
3. Recognizing company culture. I feel this is so easily overlooked and the emphasis on the importance really puts it back into perspective
4. The list of New York firms
5. Auxilliary industries and names of firms that count as interior design [industry] positions"

"I feel like one of the biggest takeaways I had was negotiating. I did not know that we could negotiate like that and how to negotiate in general.

"Thank you so much for the networking tips. especially the detailed timeline. As someone not very confident in networking, having this timeline is so helpful (I never know how many emails to send to not sound naggy etc...) And the salary negotiation script is amazing. Also, the list of firm is absolutely what we need in finding internships"

Another thing I learned and started thinking more about what the type of firm that I wanted to work for. This presentation really gave me a lot more insight on what it's like in reality"

"Thank you! It's really helpful to learn the script of negotiation, it helps to get a closer view on what work environment conversations look like."

"That's brillant, super helpful! Money is one those subjects I've never felt comfortable talking about"

"I think this was wonderful advice and will definitely help"

"I appreciated the networking tips, as a freshman, I have no experience in things like this."

Hope to see you there! Let's gooo

If we haven’t met yet, I’m Sarah!

It’s so nice to ‘e-meet’ you :)

...or for those of you who I've already met, welcome back!! I am so happy you're here.

If you're curious, here's my official bio:

I'm an NYC-based Interior Designer who creates bespoke interiors that are warm, modern, and luxurious.

My expertise is collaborating with my clients to bring their creative vision to life.

I also mentor smart and ambitious Interior Design students to help them fast-track their careers and thrive in our competitive industry.

My mantra: design, teach, repeat.

-

I created my firm SWhit Design (SWD) originally for side projects in 2015 while gaining vast experience designing at a rapidly growing, award-winning NYC architectural firm.

I used my natural enthusiasm for the creative process to successfully conceive multiple projects during my seven-year tenure at Morris Adjmi Architects (MA).

I skillfully navigated various interior programs and their nuances – from hospitality and luxury condominium buildings to office and single-family residences. Additionally, I shepherded the creation of the MA x AFNY plumbing collection, which launched in 2019.

Upon leaving, my recommendation letters acknowledged my significant role in the growth and success of the firm during my time there. As their first Interior design hire, they also recognized my leadership, mentorship, and collaborative team-focused approach as a source for inspiration and motivation in the Interior Design studio.

Major career highlights at MA also include the surreal moments of becoming a lead project designer in my mid-20s and even being the lead designer for an A-list celebrity’s new home.

Additionally, this is where I successfully negotiated multiple $10-15K raises(!) and now I help my design students master their negotiation skills.

-

2020 launched the beginning of SWhit Design Mentoring

Since then, I’ve been growing my own firm while consulting at times for Jeffrey Beers International (JBI). I've been brought in to work on key projects such as a five-star luxury resort in Costa Rica, an international entertainment agency's recording studio in NYC, and an A-list hip hop artist's private residence in Miami, among others.

Under SWD Interiors, recent projects include private residences in NYC, LA, Conneticut, Ohio, New Jersey, and Maryland. Right now I’m developing proposals for a few other exciting projects in New Hampshire, and Austin.

-

In my free time, I'm into playing soccer, basketball, scuba diving, and hiking. I love traveling and exploring nature after years of city living. Lately I've been focusing on learning more about nurturing creativity and healthy living. If I'm not designing, teaching, outside or visiting my three little nieces, you'll find me wandering the The Strand with a friend looking for my new favorite book.

I have a Master of Science in Interior Design from Pratt Institute in NYC and a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Maryland.
